“We fell in love with Millie at Speer’s Point Park when we first saw her. She had applied her mascara that morning, clearly, and was the most beautiful girl we had ever seen. After talking with Kay from FOTH, Millie came to stay with us for a few days with our two whippets, Max and Milo. She fit right in, and the boys fell in love with her.
About a month into her life with us she became very unwell, and we found ourselves on our first of several trips to the emergency vet. They suspected she had an obstruction in her stomach or bowel, so we left her overnight with them to keep her stable on fluids. I took her to our regular vet the next day; their advice was for her to have surgery immediately. Millie was operated on, and a large tumour was removed from her intestinal system. The biology was sent off and came back with the diagnosis of Lymphoma, unlucky in such a young dog, only 18 months old.
In August 2022, she was given a 6–8-week prognosis. We were devastated. We took her home, fed her loads of roast chicken, and gave her as much love as possible.
For almost a year, she lived a very normal life, going to the dog park, trips to Redhead Beach, running on the sand like a normal pup, and chasing her brothers around the backyard; retiring to her favourite spot on our bed. She had a small cancer removed from her leg in July 2023, all margins were clear, and she came home again. For another year, her health was fantastic, she was living her best life, and we couldn’t have wished for more.
Millie started limping in June 2024. We noticed a large lump behind her shoulder, which the vet diagnosed as the cancer returning and it had come back very aggressively. Despite the best efforts of the veterinary care we had, Millie passed away on 2nd July 2024.
Millie will forever hold a special place in our lives and the lives of everyone she met. She was an amazing puppy, leaving a huge Greyhound-sized hole in our hearts. Thank you to FOTH for all you do. We now have Margot staying with us who has her own story. Hopefully, Margot has found her forever home. Stay tuned!”
Thank you Nicole for sharing your story.
