“21 years ago, I started this Greyhound rescue charity.
During this time, the Greyhound racing industry has bred over 370,000 Greyhounds.
Less than 68% of these dogs were registered for racing.
Friends of the Hound has rescued and homed less than 0.01% of these Greyhounds.
These figures are heart-breaking.
And make me question the years of dedication and sacrifice.
However, over this 21 years of adoptions, we have helped to build a community, an army of Greyhound lovers and advocates.
… Y O U!
Now is a good time to show up, stand up and speak up for Greyhounds in your state.
Succinctly summed up by NSW ex-Chief Vet, Dr Alex Brittan, “Until the existing backlog of unrehomed greyhounds is acknowledged and addressed, it is utterly immoral to allow yet more greyhounds to enter this unsustainable morass of exploitation and suffering.”
The question that needs to be asked – where are all the Veterinary professionals on this issue?
Their charter and oath is to practice veterinary science ethically and conscientiously for the benefit of animal welfare.
A comprehensive, formal transition plan for the industry, including a mitigated response for the dogs, can be strategically rolled out. It needs to happen soon – and save another decade of compounding dog deaths.
Too many bred means too many dead.”

What do we mean by “Mike was right”?
In February 2015, ABC’s Four Corners revealed shocking footage of live piglets, possums and rabbits being used to “blood” greyhounds during secret race training sessions.
In May 2015, former High Court judge Michael McHugh was appointed to conduct an inquiry into the industry in NSW.
His report was handed to NSW Premier Mike Baird in June.
The report estimated that up to 13,000-17,000 Greyhounds were killed every year.
In July, Mr Baird announced his response to the report — a statewide ban on Greyhound racing.
He said the NSW Government had brought in the ban because it was determined to do what was right.
“This is an industry that is shrinking not growing. We are in a position where there [are] only eight countries in the world where greyhound racing is [practised].”
“We simply cannot stand by and allow the widespread and systemic mistreatment of animals.”
Mr Baird lost a lot of support, particularly in regional areas, where Greyhound racing ‘hobbyists’ and supporters became concerned about their ‘livelihood’.
The reversal of the ban and the granted ‘second chance’ saw some welfare improvements.
Years later however, the cruelty, corruption and careless complacency of the dog racing culture continues unchecked, as seen in regular media exposure, in all states.
